The Salvation Army Eastern Territory is Hiring a Social Services Caseworker Near Willimantic, CT

Overview

Status: Non-exempt, Part-time

Hours Per Week: 27.5

Schedule: Mon - Fri; 9:00 am – 2:30 pm

Scope & Purpose of Position: Provide essential office duties. Provide various basic and emergency assistance services to individuals in need, including food, rent, and utility assistance, referrals to community resources, and holiday food and toys. Work with Corps Officer(s) to coordinate aspects of the food pantry and record, track, and report statistical data in a timely manner. Promote Sunday, weekday, and summer programs offered to the community.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a positive and professional representative of The Salvation Army.
  • Answer phones appropriately and on time; filter out telemarketers, take messages, and manage incoming faxes.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly desk, office, and reception area. Keep confidential information secured.
  • Assist in the daily maintenance of the social services office organization, including typing, filing, mailing preparation, ordering supplies, etc.
  • Record and report all corps and social ministry statistics promptly to the statistician at Divisional Headquarters.
  • Check emails daily and respond within 1-2 business days.
  • Provide information regarding The Salvation Army’s programs and services on Sunday and throughout the week.
  • Create and update corps brochures and flyers as directed by the Corps Officer. Assist the Corps Officers with distributing brochures and flyers to neighborhoods and community events.
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures of The Salvation Army, the State of Connecticut, the Connecticut Food Bank, and any other entity governing the distribution of materials and services.
  • Adhere to the guidelines for staff responsibilities in The Salvation Army’s Employee Manuals. Adhere to the dress code of business or business casual.
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality and exhibit loyalty to The Salvation Army and its staff in all job-related matters.
  • Attend and participate in community meetings as directed by the Corps Officer.
  • Participate in training, seminars, workshops, and other educational opportunities that would enhance the skills relating to this position as requested by the Corps Officer.
  • Interview, train, and supervise community service and other volunteers with the Corps Officer.

SOCIAL MINISTRIES

  • Administer and supervise the daily operation of the Emergency Assistance Program, including interviews, referrals, and client assistance, in cooperation with the Corps Officer.
  • Coordinate the voucher program for shelter, utility, clothing, and furniture assistance, seeking the endorsement of the Corps Officers.
  • Discuss special cases with the Corps Officers attempting to resolve client situations.
  • Greet clients and provide them with the necessary forms to be assisted.
  • Make appointments for clients needing services.
  • Maintain a database of community resources to refer clients to other locations that may help address their needs. Keep abreast of community needs and possible revenue sources and inform the Corps Officer.
  • Complete all client documentation timely and accurately, including client case notes and secure, confidential paper records in a locked file cabinet.
  • Provide clients with information and referrals to appropriate Salvation Army programs and other community resources.
  • Provide all forms of direct service to clients including, but not limited to, intake/assessment, referrals, advocacy, and the provision of material assistance such as food, clothing/furniture vouchers, personal hygiene items, and Operation Fuel assistance based upon guidelines, available resources, and policies and procedures of The Salvation Army.
  • Refer clients seeking spiritual guidance to the Corps Officers.

FOOD PANTRY ASSISTANCE

  • Coordinate all aspects of the food pantry following established policies, including ordering food, ensuring that the appropriate paperwork is completed and maintained, and submitting monthly statistics to Foodshare.
  • Order all food and related items to stock the food pantry adequately. Perform necessary errands to procure sundries and other foods as needed, including weekly trips to Food Share to purchase and pick up food.
  • Receive all foods when delivered, check all deliveries for accuracy, and give food invoices to the Corps Officer(s).
  • Store all foods, as scheduled, neatly upon delivery.

SEASONAL ASSISTANCE

  • Assist with the promotion and application process of the Corps’ summer activities, youth camper registration, senior camp registration, and VBS registration.
  • Assist with the promotion of as well as the application and distribution process of the Holiday assistance programs, including Adopt-a-Family, Angel Tree, and Holiday meals/food baskets.
  • Transport children to and from Camp CONNRI in the summer as the Corps Officer(s) requested.

Qualifications

  • An understanding of and passion for The Salvation Army’s mission.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required; an associate or bachelor’s degree in social services or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of work or volunteer experience in social services or a related field required.
  • Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to organize responsibilities, multitask, and function independently.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred; proficient in spoken and written English.
  • Demonstrate ability to engage with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrate discretion, integrity, and confidentiality in dealing with all matters.
  • Detail-oriented with keen attention to accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • High energy level, solid work ethic, and the ability to respond to changing conditions while maintaining a pleasant demeanor.
  • Knowledge of community resources is preferred
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Works well in a team atmosphere.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required; ability to obtain and maintain driving privileges per Salvation Army Insurance standards.
  • Must complete KeepSAfe Core training and Mandated Reporter within 30 days of being hired and KeepSAfe refresher training annually. Must also complete the Sexual Harassment Prevention training within six months of being hired.
  • Will respect and promote the interest of The Salvation Army. The individual is not required to embrace the tenets of faith, but he/she is required to promote and respect the mission of The Salvation Army.
